Children's Hospital Boston's Institutional Master Plan (IMP), which describes the need for several LMA campus development and improvement projects over the next ten years to sustain Children's mission, was approved in June 2008. The only specific large project approved in the IMP was a proposed vertical addition to the hospital's Main Building. However, this addition posed considerable operational and construction challenges. So, on April 28, 2009, the hospital submitted an IMP Project Notification Form (IMPNF) and Notice of Project Change (NPC) to the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), initiating the process of amending the IMP and proposing a replacement large project instead.
The proposed project is a lateral expansion of the Main Building, on the site of an existing building at 57 Binney Street. The "Main Building Expansion" will not only provide Children's with 30 "net new" beds, which are urgently needed, but will also allow for critical expansion of the Emergency Department, an increase in Radiology capacity, additions to Surgical areas and provision of new inpatient support spaces. Further details and architectural renderings will follow as the approval process continues.
