Since 1977, thousands of children have been successfully treated at our multidisciplinary Neuromuscular/MDA Clinic in the Neuromuscular Program at Children's Hospital Boston.

At our clinic, one of the first programs of its kind in the United States, patients are evaluated and treated by a team of world-renowned experts in child neurology, orthopedics and genetics.

Our team of pediatric specialists works together to develop treatment plans that meet the unique needs of each patient and maximize each child's quality of life.

Neurología

Patients are evaluated by a team of specialists in child neurology led by Basil T. Darras, MD y Peter B. Kang, MD. The neurology team applies state-of-the-art clinical and laboratory diagnostic methodologies and makes recommendations for management and medical treatments.

Un EMG (Electromyography) is indicated for the evaluation of specific neuromuscular processes and is a two-part test consisting of Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and electromyography.

The EMG laboratory is directed by H. Royden Jones, MD, who founded the lab in 1979. EMGs are performed by Drs. Jones, Darras and Kang.

Ortopedia

Each patient is also seen by Frederic D. Shapiro, MD, from Children's Departamento de cirugía ortopédica. Orthopedic treatment options for children with neuromuscular diseases include:

  • Fisioterapia
  • Bracing for lower extremity weakness
  • Surgical stabilization procedures for scoliosis and other spinal deformities
Genética

Erica Sanborn, MS, CGC, provides genetic counseling to certain patients and families and coordinates the clinical research on Atrofia muscular espinal.

Patients may also be referred to the Programa de genética, if needed.

The clinic is held each week on Monday.
