Flor Statistics & Outcomes
heart drawing Despite treating some of the most complex pediatric heart conditions in the world, the Cardiovascular Program at Children's Hospital Boston has some of the best success rates.

Because hospitals present data differently and because of the uniqueness of each child's situation, it is important that statistics and outcomes are fully explained. We are happy to speak with parents regarding Children's Hospital Boston's outcomes anytime.

Anestesiología cardíaca
Children's Department of Anestesiología cardíaca is staffed by twelve full-time physicians and several highly trained nurses and technicians manage before-surgery care for:
  • more than 1,000 cardiac surgeries each year
  • more than 1,000 non-surgical procedures each year.
Cardiac Catheterization Lab
Children's has one of the largest pediatric Cardiac Catheterization Programs in the country. It draws the most talented and ambitious fellows from around the world. Seven full-time physicians perform:
  • 1,600 cardiac catheterization procedures per year
Catheter-based therapies developed and performed by Children's faculty:

Valve Dilation Válvula aórtica
Obstruction across the aortic valve can be reduced significantly without significant aortic insufficiency in most cases.
672 39
  Válvula mitral
Congenital mitral stenosis is very rare, and graded sequential valvuloplasty has substantially improved short and long term survival.
132 8
  Válvula pulmonar
Outcomes with pulmonary valve dilation are excellent and patients rarely require reintervention.
861 30
  Válvula tricúspide 25 1
Balloon dilation Stenotic pulmonary arteries
The mortality rate of this procedure has fallen 10-fold, from 2% to 0.2%. New techniques, including cutting balloons and high pressure balloons, have at the same time, increased success rates from 60% to more than 90%.
2,954 217
  Coartación de aorta   44
Other Congenital or Acquired Stenosis   239
Stent placement Coartación de aorta
Serious aortic injury, although rarely reported, may occur in 1-2% of cases. Pre-stent assessment of aortic compliance and mobility has prevented catastrophic aortic ruptures at Children's Hospital Boston.
203 18
Other Congenital or Acquired Stenosis   137
Defect closure Ventricular septal defect
Catheter closure of post-operative and multiple VSDs requires precise coordination between surgeons, interventional cardiologists and echocardiographers. With such coordination, procedural mortality is less than 1%.
308 8
Atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale
Atrial septal defect closure using one of several catheter-based devices can avoid the need for cardiopulmonary bypass, and may thereby optimize children's developmental outcome. Transcatheter device closure is offered as part of a team management approach for patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack and an interatrial communication.
1,103 67
  Leakage around prosthetic valve
Proximity of leaks to moving valve parts and other cardiac structures makes it necessary to using different closure devices and strategies on a case-by-case basis.
33 1
  Coronary artery fistula
The absence of mortality and significant morbidity in a recent series from Children's , has prompted elective closure during childhood in most cases.

Catheterization procedures
Cardiac ECMO Center
Children's Cardiac ECMO Center serves more than 40 patients with severe respiratory or cardiac problems each year.
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
La Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Children's treats more than 1,200 children each year.
Servicio consultivo de cardiología
The Cardiology Consultation Service at Children's Hospital Boston performed approximately 5,596 outpatient, and 893 inpatient consults in 2008.
Cardiology Outpatient and Inpatient Services
Children's Outpatient Cardiology Clinic is one of the busiest outpatient pediatric cardiology programs in the country with more than 21,000 visits each year.
Echocardiography and MRI
Performed each year by
Children's Non-Invasive Laboratory:

Echocardiograms 20,000
Fetal Echocardiograms 1,600
Cardiac MRI studies 1,200
Laboratorio de fisiología del ejercicio
La Laboratorio de fisiología del ejercicio at Children's Hospital performs more than 1,900 exercise tests, 1,900 holters, and 31,000 electrocardiograms (EKGs) each year.
Programa de cardiología fetal
La Programa de cardiología fetal at Children's has done more than 100 fetal heart procedures since its inception in 2001.
Programa de trasplantes cardíacos
Since its inception in 1986, Children's has performed more than 207heart transplants making it one of the largest pediatric heart transplant programs in the country.
Programa de la enfermedad de Kawasaki
Physicians and nurses treat more than 50 new patients each year for definite or suspected Kawasaki disease, and follow more than 1,400 children and young adults in the long-term Programa de la enfermedad de Kawasaki.
