This Friday, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick will join Senator John Kerry at the Martha Eliot Health Center, a community health center licensed and operated by Children's Hospital Boston, to talk about the importance of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and to call for Congress' renewal of the program.

Administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), SCHIP expands health care coverage to millions of uninsured children in the United States by providing a low-cost health insurance option to families who earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but who cannot afford to purchase private insurance.

The federal law authorizing SCHIP will expire at the end of September and must be renewed. If this does not happen, many families across the country may lose the opportunity to purchase affordable health care coverage. Millions of dollars are at risk for the state of Massachusetts.

"The State Children's Health Insurance Program has improved the lives of children in our state and across the nation by giving families access to affordable, high quality health care," says James Mandell, MD, president and CEO of Children's Hospital Boston. "Families shouldn't have to worry whether their child will have access to health care. All children deserve the opportunity for a long and healthy life."
