Children's Hospital Boston ranked number one in gastroenterology

Honored by U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Children's Hospitals" for 2008
30 de mayo de 2008
Children's Hospital Boston has been listed as the top pediatric hospital in the country for care of trastornos digestivos, según el número "Mejores hospitales pediátricos de Estados Unidos" de U.S.News & World Report "America's Best Children's Hospitals" issue, dated June 9.

"The results of this survey are a testament to the unwavering dedication and hard work of the caregivers, employees and volunteers here at Children's," said James Mandell, MD, president and CEO of Children's Hospital Boston. "We pride ourselves on providing exceptional care and service and these results are solid proof of that mission."

Children's Hospital Boston clinicians and researchers are responsible for bringing some of the most important advances to research and medicine in the world. In the last year, researchers at Children's discovered a genetic cause for a small subset of autism cases, made significant advances in reprogramming adult stem cells and creating new embryonic stem cell lines, and moved surgery on beating hearts several steps closer to clinical application. In addition, the hospital earned Categoría Magnet from American Nurses Credentialing Center for its excellence in nursing.

According to U.S.News, the purpose of the "America's Best Children's Hospitals" issue is to assist consumers in identifying medical institutions known to demonstrate the highest level of expertise in diagnosing, treating, or managing difficult medical conditions. In a further extension of the 2007 pediatric rankings that listed the top 30 pediatric centers overall, this year's issue ranks the top hospitals in cancer, digestive disorders, heart and heart surgery, neonatal care, neurology and neurosurgery and respiratory disorders, all in addition to the general overall ranking.

"All of the publicly available databases, as well as our own comparisons, find that Children's consistently performs at world class levels," adds Mandell. "We hear this from our patients and families every day, but it's always gratifying to hear it from outside sources as well."

The specialty rankings of this year's "America's Best Children's Hospitals" were based on a new and improved methodology that weighed a three-part blend of reputation, outcome, and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology, credentialing, and other factors. A detailed description of the methodology can be found online at www.usnews.com/pediatrics.

Ranking-eligible facilities were largely drawn from members of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI) in either of two categories--a freestanding children's hospital or a children's "hospital within a hospital" (a large, multidisciplinary pediatric service within a medical center). In addition, several non-NACHRI members were added because of known expertise or at the recommendation of experts. Of the 143 children's hospitals invited to complete a survey asking for information as detailed as whether a center offers postgraduate fellowships in pediatric cardiology, 113 responded. The survey was constructed by RTI International, which collects the data and oversees the methodology behind the adult Best Hospitals rankings.
